Skiing is an extremely popular recreational sport that first became popular in the Scandinavian region as well as other parts of northern Europe. It involves a mode of transportation using long, flat ski shoes across a snowy surface. During an earlier time in history, skis were used as a means for hunting, warfare and transportation by the Nordic people. As the years went by, the Nordics began to use their skis for entertainment purposes which would soon develop in to a sport. Very early accounts of skiing emerged in Norway in the 1800s and a sport now known as cross-country skiing was seen for the very first time. By mid 1800, skiing had begun to slowly make its way to North America and became a competitive sport in the state of California by the 1860s. However, popularity for the sport did not reach its peak worldwide until 1930. To date, literally thousands of ski resorts were constructed through out the world. Some of the world’s largest ski resorts today lie in the Swiss Alps, New Zealand, Japan and Colorado.
